In this chapter, Shri Krishna uses the metaphor of the Ashvattha(sacred fig) tree to explain the nature of the soul and its relationship to the material world. The tree, with its roots above and branches below, represents the soul's true nature, which is eternal and unchanging. The branches, which extend upward and downward, represent the soul's connection to the material world, which is constantly changing and impermanent.
โ The Roots of the Tree: Karma and Rebirth
The roots of the Ashvattha tree, which hang downward, represent karma, the law of cause and effect. Our actions in this life determine our experiences in the next. The downward growth of the roots symbolizes the soul's tendency to become entangled in the material world, leading to repeated birth and death.
โ The Branches of the Tree: The Senses and Desires
The branches of the Ashvattha tree, which extend upward and downward, represent the senses and desires. The senses, which are nourished by the three gunas (sattva, rajas, and tamas), draw us outward into the material world. The desires, which are the fruits of the senses, bind us to the material world, causing us to suffer.
โ Cutting Down the Ashvattha Tree: Detachment and Self-Realization
To break free from the cycle of karma and rebirth, we must cut down the Ashvattha tree with the "axe of detachment." Detachment means to let go of our attachment to the material world and its objects. It means to focus on our true nature as eternal souls, rather than on our temporary bodies and possessions.
โ The Base of the Tree: The Supreme Lord
Once we have cut down the Ashvattha tree, we must search out the base of the tree, which is the Supreme Lord. The Supreme Lord is the source of all creation, and it is in Him that we find true peace and happiness.
โ The Eternal Abode: Liberation from the Material World
Those who attain liberation from the material world go to the Supreme Lord's eternal abode. This abode is beyond the reach of time, space, and death. It is a place of perfect peace, happiness, and fulfillment.
โ The Embodied Soul: A Fragment of the Supreme Lord
The embodied soul is an eternal fragment of the Supreme Lord. However, we are currently bound by material nature, and we are struggling with the six senses and the mind.
โ The Soul's Journey: From One Body to Another
When the soul leaves an old body, it carries the mind and senses with it, just as the air carries fragrance from place to place. The soul then enters a new body, and the cycle of birth and death continues.
โ The Soul's True Nature:
The ignorant do not perceive the soul as it resides in the body, and as it enjoys sense objects. They also do not perceive it when it departs. However, those who possess the eyes of knowledge can behold the soul.
โฟ Krishna: The Source of All Creation
Krishna declares that He is the source of all creation. He is the brilliance of the sun, the radiance of the moon, and the brightness of the fire. He permeates the earth and nourishes all living beings with His energy.
Krishna is the Supreme Divine Personality. He is seated in the hearts of all living beings, and from Him come memory, knowledge, as well as forgetfulness. He is the author of the Vedanta and the knower of the meaning of the Vedas.
Krishna is transcendental to the perishable world of matter and even to the imperishable soul. He is the ultimate reality, and He is the goal of all spiritual practice.
๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐:
In essence, Chapter 15 provides understanding of the material world's nature, the importance of detachment, and the path to realizing the Supreme Divine Personality. Krishna has shared the secret knowledge of the Vedas with Arjuna. By understanding this knowledge, a person becomes enlightened and fulfills all that is to be accomplished.
